How to choose a Best Cell phone (2014) in Canada?

Cell Phone Buying Guide

Mobile phones/ Smartphones have spread faster than any other technology in the world. A smartphone (or Mobile Phone or Cell phone) is a device that can make and receive telephone calls over a radio link while moving around a wide geographic area. It does so by connecting to a cellular network provided by a mobile phone operator, allowing access to the public telephone network. Mobile phones are used for a variety of purposes, including keeping in touch with family members, conducting business, and having access to a telephone in the event of an emergency. Some people carry more than one cell phone for different purposes, such as for business and personal use.

With hundreds of handsets to choose from, it can be tough to find the right one. Our Cell Phone buying guide helps you all you need to know to dial up the perfect cell phone. Before purchasing, it is advisable to take some time to do a little research by reading reviews, specifications and its types to ensure it will provides us right features, meets our needs and budget.

General features of Cell Phone to Evaluate

  • Cell Phone features vary between different brands and models, but here are few points to check out before purchasing.
  • Call quality: Make a few test calls to your friends or family members to check the voice quality.
  • Design: Evaluate the cell phone design not just with the looks. Check whether it is comfortable to hold, access and carry.
  • Operating system: Modern mobile operating systems combine the features of a personal computer operating system others, including a touchscreen, cellular, Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS mobile navigation, camera, video camera, speech recognition, voice recorder, music player, near field communication and Infrared Blaster. The most Common software platforms are
    • Android
    • Blackberry
    • iOS
    • Sailfish OS
    • Windows Phone
  • Display: The color displays usually are CSTN, TFT, TFD or OLED with a predominant use of TFT displays in current mobile lineups. There are also two types of touchscreen displays – capacitive and resistive, which are both based on TFT technology.
  • CAPACITIVE touchscreens work by sensing the electrical properties of the human body, while RESISTIVE ones operate by sensing direct pressure applied by the user.
  • 3G support and availability: 3G is loosely defined, but generally includes high data speeds, always-on data access, and greater voice capacity. The high data speeds are possibly the most prominent feature, and certainly the most hyped. They enable such advanced features as live, streaming video. There are several different 3G technology standards. The most prevalent is UMTS, which is based on WCDMA.
  • Cameras: The most important characteristics of a camera are the resolution (measured in megapixels), lens focus type (either fixed or automatic) and the presence of a flash. The flash could be either LED (single or even double) or xenon. Auto focus lens are not a guarantee of better image quality, but fixed focus cameras are usually inferior. Some phones offer optical zoom but those are rare. Most use digital zoom, which degrades the quality of the photo. Cameras that can work in “video mode” are characterized by the maximum resolution and framerate (frames per second or fps) of the recorded video.
  • Battery: The battery is the lifeblood of your mobile phone. There are four basic types of rechargeable battery used in mobile phones.
  • Lithium Polymer (Li-Poly) Batteries: Newest and most advanced technology for cell phone batteries. Ultra-lightweight, they do not suffer from memory effect
  • Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) Batteries: Most popular technology, they also have a longer lifetime
  • Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) Batteries: They must be completely discharged before recharging or else damage can occur
  • Nickel Metal Hydrid (NiMH) Batteries: Environmentally friendly

Customer Reviews (Recommended Votes: 103 out of 166):

Positive Reviews:
  • I love it, it’s as good as I was expecting. It’s thinner than de 4s so even more comfortable and practical.
  • Just as good as advertised
  • Simple to use, very fast, clear Retina Display, lightweight. The best iPhone ever, with such a good sound quality even for phone calls
  • It’s a nice gadget with lots of mobile app to play with. I would recommend it to anyone. The next thing is IOS7
Negative Reviews:
  • The 4s is a great phone, quicker than the 4 and without the signal / aerial debacle. It’s taller than the iPhone 4s. Some may like this, but I don’t. Maps are a mess. Google maps were so much better on the 4 and 4s.
  • Apple is a great brand and has produced many fantastic products, but the iPhone 5 is not the leap ahead from the 4s that customers had hoped for, and this coupled with frustration and expense incurred by the connector design and the thinness over battery life and durability make it for me a 2 star product.

  • The ONE to Rule Them All: 5 Stars for Superior Hardware.
  • Love the phone, not the price its listed for here
  • I have had my One for 11 days and the experience has been great. A beautiful device that you can show on your work desk.
  • Let’s be honest, the first thing you will notice when you see this phone or any phone, is how nice it looks and this phone does not disappoint, it has a beautiful industrial design and aesthetics, and just oozes beauty.
Negative Reviews:
  • The battery is only 2300mAh.
  • Comparing features with the Samsung S4, the One is lacking. It’s not a deal breaker, but for those who like fancy functions, the One will not make you as happy.
  • No SD card slot

Customer Reviews (Recommended Votes: 82 out of 103):

Positive Reviews:
  • Bright display, Inexpensive, Realistic color, Lightweight.
  • I needed a phone, something to browse the internet and new groups with and to text and check my email so I grabbed a Galaxy Ace. It has surpassed my expectations and I am extremely happy with this device. I love the extra features Samsung includes that you have to search for with other phones like Kies Air.
  • It’s not a bad phone to use on a regularly basis but the only issue I am concerned with is that the memory is very minimal, including how I cannot move any of my apps to my micro sd card.
  • Over all a really good phone and I recommend it especially the price I paid for it, its definitely worth looking into. I’M INLOVE with it

Negative Reviews:
  • The keyboard is hard to use & the auto correct is a pain to use, always wrong word. Then I find it is not compatible with any other charger than Samsung, making it impossible to downsize to universal chargers to match my other gadgets.
  • Did not meet expectations, not enough internal memory
  • needs more ram, needs more internal storage, underpowered

Customer Reviews (Recommended Votes: 105 out of 148):

Positive Reviews:
  • I always get the latest and greatest Phone. There is nothing really bad to say about the S4.
  • All in all, it’s a fantastic, wonderful phone and I recommend it to anyone.
  • Overall, the S4 is a brilliant device. It’s not without its flaws and there is always room for improvement. While Apple performed wonders defining the modern smartphone, Samsung has helped take the concept one step further. If you’re looking to upgrade your older smartphone and break into the Samsung Galaxy world for the first time, the S4 is a fantastic selection. It is, arguably, the best Android phone on the market, at present.
Negative Reviews:
  • Too big, poor battery life, spotty wi-fi, lack of promised internal storage, lots of bloatware.
  • Plastic construction feels cheap and Battery life isn’t great

Customer Reviews (Recommended Votes: 29 out of 48):

Positive Reviews:
  • The incredible camera on this phone would benefit from apps that are found on iOS and Android, but missing on Windows Phone 8.
  • The camera is the obvious winner here. While 41MP seems like overkill for a smartphone, it does have its benefits. Images are sharper at larger sizes, and the 5MP photos are more crisp than what you’d normally find on any other 5MP or even 8MP smartphone camera.
  • Battery life wasn’t bad on the Lumia 1020, so that gives us a little confidence when leaving home without a charger or battery pack.
Negative Reviews:
  • Windows Phone 8 still has a way to go in terms of competing with Android and iOS. Aside from a lack of great apps, the platform desperately needs a better notification system.
  • I would recommend this phone for those who don’t spend too much time in apps, and find themselves messaging and e-mailing and browsing the web more than playing around in apps.

Customer Reviews (Recommended Votes: 301 out of 355):

Positive Reviews:
  • The screen is great, the power under the hood is more than enough and it feels every inch a top-end handset – that is until you look at the price tag and get one of the most pleasant surprises known to man, value for money.
  • The Nexus 4 is beautifully designed with a stunning display and rocking the latest version of Android. It has more connectivity than a BT Telephone Exchange and even excels in the simple matter of making telephone calls.
Negative Reviews:
  • I have had this phone for a few days now and I’m quite satisfied. There are a couple of points to note though, the phone does have a tendency to slip out of one’s hands (it maybe the larger size and slippery surfaces), so a protective case is necessary.
  • The camera is good, but it doesn’t excel itself and the photo sphere feature needs more work before its true potentially can be fully realized.
  • It’s not the lightest of handsets, and it is slightly crippled by the lack of removable storage. Plus, the lack of LTE makes it far from future-proof.

Customer Reviews (Recommended Votes: 301 out of 355):

Positive Reviews:
  • In summary a great phone for business users. Not for apps, big screen lovers, etc. This is a business phone and it proves it.
  • For keyboard lovers, it is definitely the best phone out there, hands down, no discussion.
Negative Reviews:
  • The Q10 itself is a great phone, lovely in nearly every way, but it’s meant for BlackBerry fans and not for all consumers.
  • Still, the Q10 doesn’t hold a candle to the HTC One, Galaxy S4 or iPhone 5, no matter how you look at it. The keyboard is fantastic, but when we can’t download apps and get stuck with a mediocre camera the trade-offs are hard to stick with.
